August Metro Fashion Column – AW2013 Trend Agenda

Hi all,

Whisty Fashin Column Aug 2013 Header

Here’s August’s Metro Fashion Blogger column.

Twice a year fashion writers jump over themselves to write about the new season collections and trends. Me included. Every august, post summer sale-fervour, the time comes to study the Autumn/Winter trends. I always find myself thinking it’s just too early; surely we still have weeks of sunshine left, in which to enjoy our summer wardrobe? Then I find myself fidgeting in pastel chiffon dresses, craving cosy wool layering and edgy winter separates.

Happily, the top three A/W’13 trends in the new season’s Trend Agenda are transitional; allowing you to hint that you’ve been studying the catwalk, rather than boast. No one likes a know-it-all. Adding one of these key A/W trends to your late-summer wardrobe will refresh your look; rather than give it an ‘I-got-it-before-you’ (zzzzzzzzzz) arrogance.

Pink Coats; a huge trend seen at Céline, Jonathan Saunders and Simone Rocha, are a buy now wear now A/W’13 trend. Pink coats came in dozens of shapes; overcoat, Crombie, cocoon and tailored; this trend is all about the shade. Pale, rose, frosted and dusky made up the palette of pink at shows last February. This Penneys/Primark Crombie-style coat (Pictured €40) sets off the pretty shade with masculine tailoring.

High-Shine Shoes; patent leather was seen on the feet of models in collections from Christopher Kane to Prada to Chanel. Black high-shine is here in a big way. These patent leather loafers from Pied a Terre (pictured available at Arnotts, €175) combine high-shine with classic loafers – flats (anything but ballet) are high on the A/W12 trend agenda – see Michael Kors, Boss and Louis Vuitton.

Leather Skirts; This season the leather skirt is either full-on voluminous or sleek and tight, but always comes past the knee. Calvin Klein and Prada – in bright red – created glorious full skirts while Simone Rocha created the pencil skirt in super high-shine. This is a leather take on the Hitchcockian screen siren; cinch in waists or team with oversize sweaters. Fran and Jane’s silver leather pencil skirt (pictured €119) gets it right.

I’m ready. Bring on the new season… just bit by bit.

A Style Post – Black and white fashion Trends

Hi All,

I went braving the chill today like a monochromatic fanatic…

I had a lovely weekend. Lots of work and lots of hanging out with my lil’ sis, who is possibly the coolest person I know. Naturally she thinks blogging isn’t cool, so I did the photos for this style post a when she left, to spare her the shame of holding my camera. After last weeks’ colour-heavy post, I thought the only way to counterbalance that was to make like Charlie Chaplin and go Black & White.

The outfit is a complete high-street honey-trap. There isn’t a bit of designer or vintage added to the mix. It’s all high street, and it’s all now. Refreshing?

Some fashion colur pallets are eternally current, will our desire to wear black and white/monochrome ever fade?

Penneys Spring Summer 2012 Preview

Hi All,

Penneys (Primark) showcased its early Spring / Summer ’12 collection last week in Dublin. It is a pretty large and varies collection, as you’d expect from Penneys; this part of the S/S’12 collection will be in store between now and late February.

It comprises some great print designs – see the (amazing) cars, Dalmatian dogs, daisies and Hawaiian panther designs below; pretty pastel shades – including a pale turquoise called ‘Seafoam’; as well as some classically tailored pieces – see the tuxedo-inspired jackets below.

A Style Post: Autumn Sun… and a thank you.

Hi All,

‘Street Style’ photographs are one of the most significant elements of fashion and style blogs. They’re my favourite part of other writers’ blogs and style posts are the most fun and the most stressful part of my own blog.

It’s a conversation that I often have with other personal-style bloggers; the awkwardness of being out in the street with a DSLR stuck on a tripod, you standing awkwardly in front of it holding your remote shutter release. All the time praying no-one brings you any attention/stops and stares/runs off with your camera. (I for one wouldn’t have a hope of chasing anyone in the outfits I choose to photograph myself in).

It really isn’t very fun and I have to be in an incredibly confident mood to wander about taking photographs of me. I know bloggers who have (seemingly adoring) boyfriends, willing to snap away to their heart’s content (pun intended), which I’m sure makes doing style posts that much easier.

But what it boils down to for me is being lucky enough to have some very patient and generous pals, happy prepared to point a camera at me and snap away. Often in the middle of a busy street, while I’m shouting instructions at them.

I guess I just wanted to say thanks, they know who they are; this blog really would be nothing without them…

Love you guys… Xxx

Blimey, you can tell it’s beginning to feel festive around here can’t you?

Penney’s / Primark Aumtum Collection 2011 – Rails & Details

Hey all,

Last week I had a look at the latest mid-season offerings from Penney’s / Primark*. Most of the high street stores do two main drops; Spring / Summer and Autumn / Winter, with maybe a high summer drop of bikinis and that kind of thing.

Scrabble Cushions

But with such a vast range of pieces that consistently manage to hit the latest catwalk trends spot on, you can understand why Penney’s / Primark have more than two ‘seasons’.

Their latest collections due in stores from July – October, are a mix of colour blocking, country casual, 60’s monochrome and vintage 70’s inspired deliciousness.

 And Details:

Knits, Heels & Coats:

Dear Tapestry bag, I’m going to get you.

Faux-Ostrich leather in maroon and dark blue

Shades of aquamarine

Oh I know we’re not ‘sposed to be loving platforms any more… but this is red suede people!

Simple Stripes

Vintage-inspired prints

Knitted shorts…? Gimme a brea… Oh hello!

Fair Isle Knitted shorts. Erm, I think so!

I love this, it’s a bit 90’s and I like the faux-fur shoulder detail

Padded pleather. Ah yeah, why not?

Now the sun’s decided to make an appearance, it feels OK to talk Autumn / Winter…

* The majority of the collections in the two stores is the same. There are however some pieces that are chosen specifically for Penney’s and the Irish market.

Penney’s (Primark) Spring Summer 2011 pieces

Hey All,

From one end of Irish fashion – Louise Kennedy, to the other; this time it’s the Penney’s /Primark SS11 collection. I have a very volatile relationship with Penney’s. One season you’ll find me in there once a week looking at the latest drop; the next I’ll avoid its crazed, bargain-hunting hordes like the proverbial plague.

Don’t get me wrong I frikkin love a bargain; plus, as far as manufacturing quality goes, Penney’s stuff seems to last longer than the average piece you’ll find at the fashion-forward end of the high street. But, there is only so much basic polyester a girl can handle. Texture is a huge part of fashion / style and rich natural fabrics really make or break an outfit.

Thing is, this new collection is all about new feel to fabrics; less, is the stiff chiffon and basic jersey, making way for new softer mixes of jersey and sheer fabrics. These fabrics feature throughout the two main stories; Heat Seeker and Global Traveller, as well as  the Limited Edition, the neon colour blocking and the new White collection.
