Trend Stalker: Statement Trousers

Hello all,

Here’s this month’s Metro Herald column…

Tip Top Trousers

Bold, brash and in a myriad of prints, this month’s trend focus is the statement trouser. All about shape, colour and prints, it’s the most exciting way to bring your wardrobe into the new season. Prada and Miu Miu, Balmain and Prabal Gurung, all featured printed trousers in their A/W’12 collections.

Statement trousers may look a bit intimidating but they will be your best friend this season.

Clockwise from top left, Prada, Balmain, Prabal Gurung, Miu Miu

If pastel florals and earthy tribal prints are great for spring and summer, mild September needs something more vibrant. Indeed, the trick to wearing this season’s statement trousers is about being bold. Choose paisley, damask, Art Nouveau or geo-print, just make sure your choice can be seen. No wishy washy pastels here please and definitely no leggings. Slim fit, cigarette pants, or wide-leg palazzo styles give you plenty of alternative options. Not only are the print and shape of your trousers key, but the colours and fabric are even more so; deep purple, bright green or rich blue; wool, silk or brocade will ensure your pins make the perfect on-trend statement.

The high street has great budget-friendly versions. River Island’s cigarette pant (pictured left £35/€47) will give you an abstract paisley print, in metallic Jacquard. There’s a bit of last minute S/S’12 bargain hunting online at ASOS with these oriental print, acid yellow, palazzo pants (pictured middle now £17.50/€24.88). However if you like your prints of the more traditional floral nature, choose this tapered-leg trouser at Warehouse in a midnight-blue and purple floral print (pictured right £50/€65).

Perfect for autumnal days, but teamed up with a fitted cashmere polo neck and a pair of Kurt Geiger’s Lady Bell patent flats, any of these trousers will provide a perfect look for winter too. No one will be saying you are lacking in the trouser department this September, that’s for sure.

Yours,

Whisty Xx

Chloe Sevigny & Miu Miu – A Fashionable History in Pictures

Hi All!

From blonde screen siren to red-haired tomboy, Chloë Sevigny can assume many guises, and changing hair colour aside, is certainly as diverse a model as any.  Although now known predominantly as an actress, she was hired by Sassy magazine in the mid-nineties because of her enigmatic street style.

Pre Miu Miu days: Chloë Sevigny, Street Style Shoot Sassy Magazine 1992(Before its time? It’s 20 years since this magazine fashion feature was published; it seems nothing has changed?)

As well as working for the magazine, she did modelling work before moving onto acting in 1995, starring in the controversial, Harmony Korine movie Kids.

A year later Chloë Sevigny was the face of Miu Miu Spring/Summer ’96 ad campaign (shot by Jergen Teller). Her short cropped hair and androgynous look, lent itself perfectly to the label’s, fresh young look at the time.

It’s 16 years later and she is back as the face of Miu Miu‘s  A/W ’12 ad campaign (Shot by Mert Alas); complete with cup of tea and perfectly printed trousers.

As a pretty big fan of both model and label, I think that Sevigny’s intangible, effortless cool and Miu Miu‘s eccentric chic are, once again a perfect collaboration.

Though featuring in its ad campaigns twice, Sevigny has remained a fan of the brand throughout; wearing pieces in both magazine editorials and at events on numerous occasions.

A Style Post: Striped Down

Hey All,

Last summer I was always in shorts; this year I’ve gone with the exact opposite. I’m living in my maxi-dresses at the moment. I love the femininity, and how easy they are to wear. They’re casual, laid back and if styled with flats, they’re kind of cool too.

Brown Thomas A/W11 Designer collections

Hey All,

Pretty much the most stylish and important event on the Irish fashion calendar is the Brown Thomas new-season preview. It’s the closest thing to a full-on, (established) designer fashion show in Dublin, and is met with genuine excitement and anticipation.

The A/W ’11 preview was held yesterday on Grafton Street with a ‘Return to Glamour’ theme. There were four main elements to the show; ‘Colour Fall’. ‘Glamour Decades’. ‘Prints’. ‘Outerwear’.

The collection featured highlights from 23 designers, including Céline, Miu Miu, Balenciaga and Dries Van Noten, here’s a few stand out pieces:

‘Colour Fall’

‘Glamour Decades’

‘Prints’

‘Outerwear’
Some Goodies:Utter perfection in every way at Céline

Surprising inspiration from Rachel Zoe

An alternative take on the LBD at Miu Miu (amazing sleeves)

Voluminous mini-dresses at Balenciaga

Stars and leopard print-clash dress at Dolce & Gabbana

Cups detailing in velvet at Tom Ford

Man, I am ever a sucker for military detailing. The back of the Alexander McQueen coat.

I reckon it must be a pretty tough job being  a buyer at Brown Thomas. Imagine looking at every amazing piece that each design house comes up with, every season, and then having to cherry pick the most commercial and ‘less risky / outlandish’ pieces to sell in store. They’ve done it though, I think this Autumn / Winter collection is both inspiring and commercial. I don’t know if I could do that!

Whisty Xx

DVF = Dramatic, Virbrant Footwear… Right?

Hey All,

I’ve been shoe-perving again this week. You know with shoes, you have your favourite designers; either eternally (mine’s YSL and more recently Miu Miu) or seasonally (3.1 Phillip Lim SS 2011 T-bar snake-skin heels).

Queen, (or princess? Diane von Furstenberg was once married to a German Prince) of the silk-jersey wrap dress, DVF appointed Frenchman Yvan Mispelaere as creative director last year. A new creative head often means huge changes for a design house… but as the title may suggest, I’m shoe-gazing.

Diane von Furstenberg‘s spring / summer 2011 footwear, is vibrant, wearable – see those heels, they’re not spindles – and as on-trend as they are timeless. I was in Brown Thomas the other day, watching the launch of the new DVF collection in-store when I saw these samples on the runway…

DVF’s clutch collection was worth a look too, lots of snake-skin, tassels and rock-chic elements:

Have a great weekend,

Yours,

Whisty Xx

Glourious Leather Love – Angelina’s Red Carpet Moment

Angeline Jolie Leather Dress Inglorious Basterds LA PremiereThe LA premiere of Quentin Tarantino‘s Inglourious Basterds was held last night at Graumans Chinese Theatre. The movie, in-case you haven’t heard, stars Brad Pitt who last night he attended the screening and was accompanied by Angleina Jolie. She looked fabulous in a tight-as-you-like Michael Kors leather dress, teamed with loose laid back tresses and a pair of strapy Christian Dior heels. It’s a far-cry from the tea-rose Atelier Versace dress she wore to the Cannes premiere earlier in the year and it’s a nod to a younger, more rebellious Angelina Jolie.

Get the look for less; top left – ‘Cheap Chic’ – Leather shift dress €156 Oasis. Bottom Right – ‘Boutique’ – Miu Miu leather, boned bustier dress £1390 Net-a-Porter.
