A/W’12 Trends: Embellished Jackets

Hey all,

Here’s this month’s Metro column… Embellished Jackets are this winter’s wardrobe essential…

Why wear something plain when you can go all out this season and dress like a shimmering, bedecked Bohemian?

Metallic, ‘rock-chic’ embellishments have been around for the last few seasons, but for Autumn/Winter ’12, embellishment just got a whole lot more serious. Brash metalwork gives way to sophisticated needlework.

No longer will a few studs on the shoulders of your T Shirt suffice; you need rows of beads, rhinestones, braiding, appliqué flowers, Grosgrain ribbon and lace, this is a cacophony of embellishment. It’s like opening your Granny’s sewing tin and fixing every button, bead, and strip of ribbon to a single item of clothing… in a neat and cleverly constructed way of course…

Before this season I’d really only saved heavily embellished pieces for special occasions; birthdays, the Christmas party, winter weddings. It’s because the embellished pieces in my wardrobe are nearly always black dresses. This season, thanks to designers like D&G, Balmain and Bottega Veneta we’re adding colour and variety to this trend. Autumn/Winter 2012’s embellished dresses, trousers, jackets and accessories arrived in rich sumptuous colours; gold, deep green, rich blackberry and opulent cream. By adding an embellished jacket to a staple outfit you’re creating a look to wear from now until Christmas.

The best high street offerings include the black, cream and gold versions from River Island (pictured £70/€107) and Miss Selfridge (pictured £85/€110). For something more subtle then Fran & Jane have this beautiful bead and sequin encrusted zip-up jacket (pictured £160/€199). All would look as good teamed with a chiffon dress, as they would with a pair of tailored statement trousers. If you’re planning on heading off for the bank holiday at the end of the month, it might be an idea to upgrade your luggage allowance though; this trend is definitely in the heavyweight category.

Yours,

Whisty Xx

Trend Stalker: Statement Trousers

Hello all,

Here’s this month’s Metro Herald column…

Tip Top Trousers

Bold, brash and in a myriad of prints, this month’s trend focus is the statement trouser. All about shape, colour and prints, it’s the most exciting way to bring your wardrobe into the new season. Prada and Miu Miu, Balmain and Prabal Gurung, all featured printed trousers in their A/W’12 collections.

Statement trousers may look a bit intimidating but they will be your best friend this season.

Clockwise from top left, Prada, Balmain, Prabal Gurung, Miu Miu

If pastel florals and earthy tribal prints are great for spring and summer, mild September needs something more vibrant. Indeed, the trick to wearing this season’s statement trousers is about being bold. Choose paisley, damask, Art Nouveau or geo-print, just make sure your choice can be seen. No wishy washy pastels here please and definitely no leggings. Slim fit, cigarette pants, or wide-leg palazzo styles give you plenty of alternative options. Not only are the print and shape of your trousers key, but the colours and fabric are even more so; deep purple, bright green or rich blue; wool, silk or brocade will ensure your pins make the perfect on-trend statement.

The high street has great budget-friendly versions. River Island’s cigarette pant (pictured left £35/€47) will give you an abstract paisley print, in metallic Jacquard. There’s a bit of last minute S/S’12 bargain hunting online at ASOS with these oriental print, acid yellow, palazzo pants (pictured middle now £17.50/€24.88). However if you like your prints of the more traditional floral nature, choose this tapered-leg trouser at Warehouse in a midnight-blue and purple floral print (pictured right £50/€65).

Perfect for autumnal days, but teamed up with a fitted cashmere polo neck and a pair of Kurt Geiger’s Lady Bell patent flats, any of these trousers will provide a perfect look for winter too. No one will be saying you are lacking in the trouser department this September, that’s for sure.

Yours,

Whisty Xx

More A|wear Discounts!

AWear 20 precent discount

A|wear are seriously pushing their fabulous new AW09 collection. This time it’s 20% off on-line shopping with the Closer Magazine reader offer. The code is on the A|wear website as well as in the magazine.

If you have yet to see the new collection, do have a browse as it is definitely one of the strongest that they have created. They have key pieces inspired by many of the season’s hottest trends and designers, as well as some seriously fierce and seriously feminine themes.

This dress is €40 in-store, the cardi is €35 and the necklace €10, so if you bought them with the discount you’d save €17. (Yes, I have a calculator too!).

Trend Watch – Buckled Boots

Arguably the most famous boots with buckles on are Hunter Wellingtons. But unless you live on a farm or muck out stables, they are reserved, for the most part, for an annual outing to Oxegen. Though incidentally New Yorkers are huge fans of the humble welly, I was there in April and I promise you they are the footwear of choice for all of Manhattan!

Leaving the mighty Hunter aside, designers have put buckles all over their ‘regular’ boots and I personally would love a pair; the only requirement is the more buckles the merrier! They would look incredible with dresses and skinny trews alike and would bring right through the seasons offering that edginess that plain old non-embellished boots would be hard pressed to.

These Balmain and Chloé ones are the best I’ve seen, if only my pocket matched my taste. I put it to the high street to offer something amazing and affordable for AW09!

Balmain Suede buckled ankle boots €1,059.69 Chloé Multi buckle leather boots €850

L – Balmain Suede buckled ankle boots €1,059.69, R- Chloé Multi buckle leather boots €850. Balmain and Chloé collections are available in Brown Thomas.

Ripped to the Max

If you are going to go ripped this season, then you have to really tear it up…

Balmain RTW SS09 Ripped JeansA little scuff around a pocket or two just isn’t going to cut it I’m afraid, you need to rip it up like Balmain SS09 and buy jeans that have rips and scuffs along the entire leg length. The best jean shapes to go for are skinny or straight leg. To transcend the seasons try wearing lacy tights underneath the jeans so the lace will show through the rips and holes as the weather get chillier. Continue reading ‘Ripped to the Max’

Beyoncé Does Perfect City Style

Beyoncé is currently rocking Dublin’s O2 Arena, with reports of a fantastic show last night and more to come this evening. What better time to look at the glamorous girl’s wardrobe? Known for her red carpet glamour and super sexy music videos Beyoncé’s style is always high octane, but her name has become synonymous with fashion house Balmain since she fell for their SS09 collection, She caused fashion bloggers everywhere to coo with delight when she stepped out in the Balmain Crystal Jacket earlier in the year.

Beyonce Shopping Get the Look copy

Beyoncé’s, ‘I Am’ tour brought her to France last month and she was spotted leaving the Balmain boutique in Paris in a seriously drool worthy outfit. She was gone from banging glamour to bang on-trend, I love this outfit; She’s mixing up Luxe sequins with the slouchy print Tee; the ¾ sleeve leather jacket with the statement necklace; and laid back cool with the Wayfarers and multi coloured (Aldo!) glads. It is a perfect in-the-city outfit, especially for our temperamental weather.

Get the look for less;

Buddy Holly Shades £15 Urban Outfitters

Gryphon Sequin Mini Skirt €123 Intermix

Miso New York Slouchy Tee £16.99 Republic

Rosenberger Gladiator Sandal £45 Aldo

Shrunken Biker Jacket £50 House of Fraser

Statement Necklace £25 Accessorize

Unique Boutique Sequin Skirt £55 asos

If the Gryphon Sequin Mini is out of your price league then Asos have this gorgeous Unique Boutique Sequin Skirt for £55, which gets the Luxe sequin effect without the Luxe price.

Update… The most glamorous thing to hit the Phoenix Park this summer… even in treggings and woolen uggs, Beyoncé looks stunning with her Wayfarers on and her gorgeous hair all Bo-ho as she gets some fresh air in Dublin’s biggest park. P.s. Loving the braces!
