Last weekend Dannii Minogue looked fabulous at LA airport in this pale ensemble. She teamed a gorgeous pair of white trousers with this neutral leather jacket and sparkly top which works really well; not to mention the big shades and fierce wedges. White is one of the trickiest colours to wear well because it can often look a bit cheap and not-so-cheerful.
It is hugely popular in summer monthsthough so taking inspiration from how Dannii wears white well, here’s a list of do’s and don’ts when wearing white this summer.
Read how to wear white dos and don’ts read on…
First and foremost this is the numero uno rule: Do wear flesh coloured underwear when wearing white. White underwear will show through like a beacon so everyone will be able to see if you are wearing a teeny g-string or your Bridget Jones bloomers… classy.
Do accessorise with brown / tan leather instead of black when it comes to shoes and bags. Black can be too heavy and wintery to team with white but tan sandals and a slouchy tasselled Boho bag works perfectly for casual summer style.
Do check to see if your skirt / dress is see through; hold it up to the light and hold your hand up behind it. If you can see the outline of your hand or worse the colour of your hand you will be able to see the same where your dress / skirt ‘covers’ your legs. Consider wearing a plain petticoat underneath to avoid showing too much leg.
Don’t do head to toe white; mix it up, for example, by teaming white trousers with a top / jacket in a similar toned colour. White can look too matchy with a whole-white outfit, try gold heels instead. Navy is also a classic accompaniment to white for a reason, it looks fabulous. Wearing the whole outfit in white will make you look like a lost member of a nineties boy-band.
Don’t wear white skin-tight. Because white coloured clothes are often more transparent than other colours, stretching it across your bum or thighs will only make it even more sheer. Go for loose styles in rich fabrics like linen and cotton.
Don’t forget the power of the plain white shirt. The ultimate wardrobe staple and works in every season with so many looks. The best style to go for is a longer length one so that you can wear it tucked into smart navy slacks, jeans or a tight-fitting bandage skirt. Or you can wear it as a shirt dress, belted at the waist and worn with shorts or leggings if needs be.
