Matthew Williams for H&M

Confirmed the Matthew Williamson collection hits H&M’s South King Street,store in Dublin April 23rd!! It seems that the world of celebrity can’t wait the extra week before the latest designer capsule range hits H&M stores. Katy Perry and “He’s just not that into you” star Ginnifer Goodwin, have managed to get their lucky mitts on some of the stunning creations from Matthew Williamson’s H&M capsule collection for H&M already!

Williamson is the latest high-end designer about to cause the now customary fashion scrum, as he launches what he calls his “first collection” for H&M.

He says “My main inspiration for the collection was to really look back at the past 11 years of work that I’ve done for my main line and to really look at the pieces that I felt were iconic and special and memorable in some way. So just pulling on the strengths of what I think I’ve become known for as a designer.”

With this idea in mind, looking through the collection you can’t deny that this collection of peacock colour-inspired pieces is definitely Matthew Williamson. The rich emerald greens, azure blues and fuchsia pinks stand out boldly against the dark metallic’s, neutral browns and studded leather. Mixing pretty and feminine with masculine edginess to create looks that represent Williamson’s collections throughout his career; there’s even the butterfly tee thrown in for good measure.

“Well my design philosophy is pretty similar today as it was when I started in 1997″, says Williamson, “and that’s really about me creating collections that are very uplifting and celebratory; sort of give a feel / a sense of escapism”. I like clothes that are full of texture and pattern and colour and that generally have a sort of laid back bohemian quality to them. The tailoring the sort of quite androgynous electric-blue trouser suit is one of my favourites and I like it because I think it represents Matthew Williamson moving forward”.

Not only has Williamson employed his iconic pieces, but if you study his SS09 ready to wear collection for his main line, you can see that Williamson has incorporated a great deal of these ideas into the H&M capsule collection. He has simplified, modified and objectified the SS09 ready to wear collection making the H&M collection, as he says, more accessible to a wider audience.

“I think the most stylist women are those perhaps react against the trends and they have their own take on things. So the first collection I have done for H&M; hopefully it embodies that feeling of an eclectic mix of a great few pieces for anyone’s wardrobe. I’ve always looked at H&M as a great high street brand; I think they bring a certain high-fashion appeal to a much wider audience than a designer brand can often do. So that challenge for me was really exciting; to sort of marry my creative strengths with their facility to get that product out to a much wider audience. To be able to do what I do in the pure form but actually to reach out to more people”…

From April 23, around 200 H&M stores worldwide will carry Williamson’s wardrobe of eclectic prints and vivid colour pieces.
