Legwarmers with high heels, why so scandalous?
The chilly weather is showing no signs of letting up but the silvery lining to those rainy clouds means that the leg warmer / high heel trend can continue to gain strength.
But even though it is basically a footless sock, the leg warmer is seen as the ultimate fashion faux pas. There have been times when I have worn them out and random people feel the need to shout FAME! at me, this is all very odd. I could retaliate by shouting “Next menswear” back at them, mocking their safe run of the mill fashion, but that would be rude. I find it strange that a piece of clothing that has been around for so long provokes such strong reactions.
There are varying degrees to these reactions; I was having a chat with a work colleague when I pulled up my super long warmers over my knees, she almost recoiled in horror. But having them ruched down around my ankles was totally acceptable to her. Ok I have worn leg warmers in this way to work on previous occasions so maybe she had become used to that particular look, but what is it about these harmless ballerina’s essentials that seem to shock people?
Online forums and blogs are full of people screaming NO! to them. Saying that they hated legwarmers first time ‘round in the eighties and they never wanted to see them again. There we see the root of the problem; most people over the age of 20 remember the 80’s with disdain, declaring it the least stylish era in fashion history. All shoulder pads, bad perms and garish make-up; leg warmers are quintessentially 80’s therefore they carry with them the entire stigma that the decade’s fashion represents.
Well tough, I love legwarmers, not only are they practical, allowing you to wear your shortest skirts in the coldest weather by keeping your legs warm; they’re also a great way to add colour to your outfit. I have leg warmers in white, grey, black, Fuchsia pink and purple I try to make sure that I wear different coloured warmers to the tights / jeans that I am wearing, but for a more subtle look black leg warmers with black tights looks cute and is really easy to wear. Leg warmers also look so much less tried than knee high-socks, less glamour girl and more urban fashionista.
I have gone from wearing my legwarmers over plimsolls and ballet pumps to wearing them with my smartest, highest heels. I wear them up or down over tights with a short skirt, over skinny jeans and with bare legs if the weather warms up. I reckon all of us should have a pair; we should bring the leg warmers out of their eighties crimes against fashion cell immediately, after all they’re just sock with the toes cut off… what’s so wrong about that?
And it’s not just me, this long length leather version, was seen backstage at the Paris and Milan fashions shows this month.
If you want to indulge in a pair of legwarmers or two, Showco in Georges Street Arcade have the mot amazing collection in Dublin. They have pretty much every colour possible.
