Style Post: Disco Kimono

Hello All,

All that glitters… I feel like a magpie at the moment. Anything shiny or sparkly and I want it. I bought this kimono in a charity shop and even though it feels like I’m wearing a post-marathon foil blanket, I love it. Any excuse and I’ve thrown it on.

A Style Post: Dead End Street

Hello All,

I hadn’t really thought about winter hats before I saw this vintage sheepskin one. I love the bond-girl look that you get with it. Cream jumpers are pretty big for A/W’11, I like the slightly puffed shoulders and extra long cuffs of this one. It makes it really feminine and unique.

The shorts are Chloé, they were originally trousers, but after getting a hole in one of the legs, I cut them into a pair of scalloped-edge shorts. Not that I would argue with Stella McCartney (who designed the Fall 2000 collection that the trousers were in), but I prefer them as shorts now.

A Style Post – of sorts

OR: I’m a blogger and I gots to get paid.

Hey All,

How the dickens are you? It’s been a while, but I have returned from an impromptu sabbatical that involved a little vintage expedition. he role of ‘blogger’ is very often used with a slash. As in, she’s a DJ / actress / blogger. More recently the trend of the slash list is more along the lines of she’s a vintage seller / blogger.

It makes sense really especially if the blogger in question is a vintage fan and has a pretty large stock of vintage pieces… You can see where I am going with this right? So yes Whsity has embarked on a teeny tiny vintage project with a company called Once Removed, ‘launching’ a range of vintage pieces, called Once Removed Vintage.

Here’s a few of the pieces on-line:

Suits

Vintage 80′s Floral Suit

Vintage 80′s Thistle Print Suit

Maxi Dresses

Vintage 70′s Maxi Dress with Matching Cape

Vintage 70′s Tapestry Print Maxi Dress

Shirts & Skirts

Vintage 80′s Check Print, Roll Sleeve Top

Vintage 80′s ruffle-neck shirt & Vintage 80′s Leather Pencil Skirt

Vintage 70′s Paisley Jacket & Vintage 80′s Pleated Midi Skirt

Dresses

Vintage 80′s Denim ‘Rah-Rah’ Dress

Vintage 80′s ‘Laura Ashley’ Cocktail dress

Vintage 70′s Pink Secretary Dress

And a couple of pieces I may just have half-inched for my own wardrobe…

Vintage 80′s striped shirt & Vintage 80′s reworked pleated skirt

Vintage 80′s Leopard Print Blazer.

Whisty Xx

A Style Post – Sid Vicious Inspired

Hey All.

It’s been a great week, blogging every day (or thereabouts). Some posts were more of a challenge than others, Thursday’s vintage post for example took a lot of time; I wanted to make sure I had as much information as possible. The last post of the week however, took no research, I just pulled on a pair of trousers – i.e. it’s a simple style post.

I finally succumbed to the wintry weather earlier this week and pulled out my winter coat. I was heading out for a walk and decided to go to St. Patrick’s Cathedral. I love that part of Dublin, it’s so old and historic and beautiful on once side.  But I also love the other side of the N81 as well, around D8, with its cobbled streets and abandoned buildings.

I’m not usually one for 80′s style but when I saw this leopard-print (with a twist) shirt in Age Action, there is no way I could resist.

A Good Vintage (a list) The Big Blogging Week – post #5 of 6

Hey All,

I had a bit of an idea yesterday (Thursday) morning. On Monday, I wrote list of blogs I promised to post this week, and vintage one of them. I deliberately left the subject fairly ambiguous on purpose and what I propose is to create a list of as many Irish based vintage, boutiques / shops / on-line stores that I know of. Having everything all in one place will definitely help me out when I’m thinking of where to shop for something old and beautiful.

Firstly, it’s probably a good idea to determine what the term vintage means. If we go with the Wikipedia description, because I reckon it best represents my idea of what the term means, it states:

“Generally speaking, clothing which was produced before the 1920s is referred to as antique clothing and clothing from the 1920s to 1980s is considered vintage. Retro, short for retrospective, usually refers to clothing that imitates the style of a previous era”.

(NB: Anything newer than 80′s is second-hand clothing).

Vintage goes mainstream

Hey All,

Happy Monday.

I’m not sure if it was because board games were boring; we had a bizarre sense of enjoyment or it was simply because we weren’t allowed to watch Grange Hill, but while my sister and I were growing up, our favourite game, by a million miles, was dressing up. We actually had a ‘dressing up box’ which was a big trunk filled with an amazing collection of my Gran’s old clothes, a lot of dodgy 70′s & 80′s stuff, random bridesmaids dresses and fancy dress costumes. Shoes, hats, bags, gloves, scarves, cravats, you name it, we had it in our dressing-up box.

I’m not sure if it’s because of the dressing-up box,  but I still can’t resist the urge to try stuff on that will quite obviously serve no purpose in my day-to-day life. If you are a regular reader here, you’ll know that I like old clothes for a hundred reason’s (most of them pretty obvious). One particular reason I like it so much is because it causes a bit of a divide. Some people just don’t like it, they complain about the way it smells or that someone else has worn it, or that vintage shops are crowded and dark. The reasons go on, none of which I agree with of course.

If anyone says this to me in future however, rather than argue the point, I have the following sentence to use in retort:

“Go and visit Hayworth Vintage in Arnotts, and come back to me with those thoughts”.

I was talking to a friend of a friend who was wearing an amazing vintage fur coat last week. When I hinted gushed that I loved it, she told me about the concession in Arnotts. I was over the top excited to go and have a look around, so I did, last Friday and this is what I saw.

Wow.

So I tried a couple on. They were reduced from €180 to around €120.

This one was definitely my favourite,  I felt like an extra in Cry Baby.

P.S. Hayworth Vintage are celebrating their 2nd birthday by offering a 10% discount for the month of October,

Wild Child Originals, Dublin

Hey All,

This week I’m mostly craving printed maxi skirts and dresses. 60′s / 70′s vintage printed, maxi skirts and dresses to be more precise. Since I’d noticed Wild Child vintage clothing had moved from Georges St. Arcade to Drury Street., I thought a bit of window shopping / dressing-up was in order.

The new shop, 26 Drury Street

Navy printed 70′s maxi dress

Mint-green embroidered 70′s maxi

Ground floor, a row of vintage cowboy boots, (sans cowboys unfortunately).

First floor, vintage frocks and furs

The basement, seriously Sweeney furniture.

I think I want to go to a party wearing the mint-green dress above. One where I get to sit in this chair and drink Babycham and brandy, while smoking cigarettes through a large, gold cigarette-holder.

Beggars Banquet Foray

Dear Readers,

You know how, at a certain age, you think you’ve pretty much heard all the interesting things you could possibly know about the place you grew up. Plus the smaller the town the younger you are when you’ve heard it all, because the less there is find out. We moved from London to a small town near Nottingham when I was a child. A verysmall town, and I think I had barely reached my teens before I thought I had heard all there was to hear about Castle Donington.

However last week I was chatting to my Mum and her bother about music in the 60′s and how they had both seen the Rolling Stones live in concert. (As well as an unbelievable amount of other bands, of course). Then came the revelation that not 5km from the house I grew up in was a beautiful country folly where this photograph was taken…

I grabbed my camera, a vintage 60′s dress and drove over there. The band photographs were used on promo posters for their 11th studio album, Beggars Banquet.

Since the ‘Stones left the building has been renovated and it looks as though someone mows the grass now too. I never really get very nostalgic, but walking through the gateway at Swarkestone Pavillion, I imagined it was a portal back to 1968, and that when I got through the other side I would find Mick Jagger, Brian Jones and Keith Richards sprawled on the grass.

Rolling Stones Pictures via: www.iorr.org.

One photograph from the shoot was also used on the back cover of the album Hot Rocks, 1964-71.

Street Style Inspiration

I was on the Topshop blog, as we bloggers need to see what wonders are being posted about in the bloggosphere. Little Boots was a guest blogger for Topshop earlier this year style-hunting in Bristol and Nottingham. She posted this pic and I have fallen in love with this outfit. It’s a perfect mix of vintage floral and edgy rock chick.

Topshop Street Style Blog 1It’s a perfect outfit for trudging around the vintage markets in Dublin this weekend! Thank you Little Boots and cool Nottingham chica!
