Trend Stalker: Statement Trousers

Hello all,

Here’s this month’s Metro Herald column…

Tip Top Trousers

Bold, brash and in a myriad of prints, this month’s trend focus is the statement trouser. All about shape, colour and prints, it’s the most exciting way to bring your wardrobe into the new season. Prada and Miu Miu, Balmain and Prabal Gurung, all featured printed trousers in their A/W’12 collections.

Statement trousers may look a bit intimidating but they will be your best friend this season.

If pastel florals and earthy tribal prints are great for spring and summer, mild September needs something more vibrant. Indeed, the trick to wearing this season’s statement trousers is about being bold. Choose paisley, damask, Art Nouveau or geo-print, just make sure your choice can be seen. No wishy washy pastels here please and definitely no leggings. Slim fit, cigarette pants, or wide-leg palazzo styles give you plenty of alternative options. Not only are the print and shape of your trousers key, but the colours and fabric are even more so; deep purple, bright green or rich blue; wool, silk or brocade will ensure your pins make the perfect on-trend statement.

The high street has great budget-friendly versions. River Island’s cigarette pant (pictured left £35/€47) will give you an abstract paisley print, in metallic Jacquard. There’s a bit of last minute S/S’12 bargain hunting online at ASOS with these oriental print, acid yellow, palazzo pants (pictured middle now £17.50/€24.88). However if you like your prints of the more traditional floral nature, choose this tapered-leg trouser at Warehouse in a midnight-blue and purple floral print (pictured right £50/€65).

Perfect for autumnal days, but teamed up with a fitted cashmere polo neck and a pair of Kurt Geiger’s Lady Bell patent flats, any of these trousers will provide a perfect look for winter too. No one will be saying you are lacking in the trouser department this September, that’s for sure.

Yours,

Whisty Xx

A Style Post: Peplum Rally

Hello, Happy Friday!

I am still chasing peplum’s for Spring/Summer ’12. I think they’re really feminine without being remotely girly. As far as I know, the peplum is introduced into fashion in the late 1800′s and later re-introduced in the 1940′s. As with many aspects of women’s fashion then, modifications are made to clothes to change the otherwise very slim female silhouette, i.e. modifications, such as peplums gave women shape and curves where there might not have been any.

I’m wearing this one with a simple, Prada silk shift to balance out the frill on the skirt. Mis-matched accessories give me two ways to add colour – the snake-skin clutch is vintage and the pink suede pumps are Carvela, KG.

Top, Prada

Skirt, Forever 21

Vintage Bag, ORVintage

Shoes, Carvela, Kurt Geiger

Whisty Xx

Mixing up the SS10 Trends

Alexander Wang and Christian Dior‘s SS10 collections were about as polar opposite as you could get. Both also, managed to epitomise the  Fashion Week city that they showed in; Wang in New York and Dior in Paris. I did the first post of the year on SS10 Trends and while researching, totally fell in love with the sporty trend epitomised by Wang’s collection; the layering, the colours, the shapes and the pure casualness of it. But, I just never dress that, down.

On the other hand I also adored the outer-underwear trend, which John Galliano made Dior’s own; the femininity, the simple lines, the craftsmanship and the utter sexiness of it. But this is not a look for everyday Dublin. So I’m thinking of mixing the two ideas together, (trust me, if I could, I would be wearing both designers this post and these photos are merely a nod to both trends!).

So, instead, I’m mixing up Jersey, Lycra and pretty lace, along with some Prada-esque hair and a bit of ‘ghetto’ bling. to dreate a look that takes the casualness of the Sport trend and the  ultra-feminine feel of the underwear trend. More photos and outfit details at Her Apparel.

Happy New… Season! SS2010 Trend Alerts

What better way to start the new year than with a post that concentrates on the trends designers and the high street will have us loving this season. I’ve spent the last few days perusing, debating and ruminating the lot and have pulled 1 or 2 pieces from the high street that I reckon might temp me when the weather changes. I love the snow but SS10 collections are not built for it, I’m holding out for the Spring and dying to try, Outer-underwear, bold prints – if only I could afford you Proenza Schouler – and the thoughts of getting sports-mad scares me… in a good way. If anyone can convince me Mr Wang can! Oh and not to mention SS10 hair is to die for.

SS10 Runway Hair

The cheapest and most simple way to update your look is by checking your hair. Think: Loose, casual, natural, plaits, soft waves, relaxed, tousled, romantic, feminine and soft.  These are my absolute faves:

Ginny gets Grazia

Bonnie Wright Grazia Shoot 1 lo resMake no bones about it, this blog is a fan of Emma Watson’s style but it seems that her co-star and friend, Bonnie Wright, AKA Ginny Weasley, is also a budding contender in the style stakes. This weeks Grazia has featured the young actress in a moody and super stylish four page spread in the mag. I grabbed a copy today and am seriously impressed, the 18 year old showed her classic, understated style at the recent HP6, UK and US premiers wearing Miu Miu and Prada respectively. Of her fashion choices she says, “I wanted two totally different looks, Miu Miu is more of a fun, London, fashion-forward idea and for New York it was more elegant.” Speaking to Grazia she also confessed, “It took me such a long time to decide what to wear”.

She also chats about what it is like growing up with the cast and crew of Harry Potter and what her ambitions are after the final scene has been filmed. She comes across as unguarded and genuine in the interview and at 18, that’s exactly how she should come across.

Bonnie is wearing a DVF dress and Temperley belt. DVF is available at BT2, Temperley at Brown Thomas.

Too see the rest of the pics…

Jennifer-Aniston WIF Prada Gold dress

Jennifer Aniston chose to wear something a little different to attend the Women in Film awards in Century City California, on Friday and looked fabulous in this crushed gold Prada dress.

Proving that you don’t need a man on your arm when you’ve got gold Prada, Ms Anniston picked up and award for excellence in film during the ceremony after stopping the show on the Red Carpet.

Chloe Sevigny in C Magazine

Ok, so here in Dublin we don’t get C Magazine, but we love Chloe Sevigny’s amazing style. These pictures are from the shoot by David Cameron, in the April edition. The list of designers she is wearing is like a who’s who, if your names not down…
