Jagger turns 18 Today.

Georgia May Jagger naturally. As a little ode to her coming of age I’m posting a couple of pics from her SS10 Versace ad campaign. I must admit, I was surprised to hear that Sir Mick’s daughter was only born in , gasp, 1992…. Oh good Lord I’m old!  Even so, 2009 was a huge year for her, (see below) the end of the year even saw her awarded the B.F.C. Model of the year accolade.

Anyway, to make matters even harder for us mere regular type people to deal with – because being 18; having an utterly down-to-earth supermodel-type mother in Jerry Hall and a rock GOD for a father; getting a UK Vogue cover; and nabbing campaigns for Rimmel and Hudson Jeans, just isn’t enough- she looks absolutely H-amazing in these Versace SS10 Ads. Though the bags, on the main part, (the purple aligaitor esp.) entice me, the dresses, colours, prints and cuts make me desperate to have every one. (This yellow one looked incredible on the catwalk). I think Georgia May has definitely been styled to look a bit, Brigitte Bardot but pulls it off in a completely contemporary way. So, enjoy, if you will… enviously or otherwise.

Real Rock Chicks

Each time I write or say the words “rock chick” I almost cringe. For a start it’s a bit clichéd, the term has been bandied about freely over the last few years whenever leather jackets or distressed denim happen to be on trend. Secondly, apart from women like Chrissy Hines and Debbie Harry are there really any real rock chicks anyway?

Lets take it back 40 years or so, before the term rock chick was ever used. During the 60′s, a time of massive social change, rock music was created and became a way of life for many people. Bands like the Rolling Stones, created music for their own generation and it influenced everything, not least fashion. Though some artists, like Keith Richards and Jimi Hendrix had incredibly unique style, it was the women who hung out with these men that really led the way when it came to fashion. These were the original and real rock chicks; they created a new look, one that was relaxed, it was, don’t-try-too-hard, laid back and eclectic. It was a huge step away from the primped and preened Stepford Wives look of the 50′s and a step toward the rebellious freedom that the 60′s represented.

Both the Rolling Stones and their wives/girlfriends are the ultimate rock style icons. I love everything Keith Richards, Mick Jagger and Anita Pallenberg are wearing in this selection of photographs from the late 60′s and early 70′s.

Other style-forward rock chicks include, Beatles first-ladies, Jane Asher (looking amazingly Mod-tastic) and Barbara Bach.

Jim Morrison’s wife Pam and on a slight tangent, because they say that comedians are the new rock stars, Peter Cook’s wife, Judy Huxtable.

One rock star that was more stylish than any of the women he was associated was Jimi Hendrix, his military influenced jackets worn open here with huge medallions sound dubious but look amazing.

Super Model, Super Influence

With the Metropolitan Museum, New York’s latest exhibition, Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion it brings to our attention that models have been influencing fashion for decades. We are so preoccupied with Kate Moss inspiring the fashion of the moment that we could easily believe that it is a new phenomenon. But just as Hollywood actresses have for decades inspired fashion and trends so too have models.

Think Jean Shrimpton’s controversial appearance at the Melbourne Cup in Australia, 1965 which caused the universal acceptance of the Mini skirt. Or Twiggy in the mid 60’s, as the face of ’66. Her stick-thin frame and amazing eye make up influenced the way young women not only dressed but also the way the desired their physique to be.

On then to the 70’s with the rise of the glamazonian model, Jerry Hall and Grace Jones inspired women to seek the luxuries in life. Gerry herself was discovered on a beach in St. Tropez and by the end of the decade was a regularly seen on the arm of Mick Jagger in swish haunts such as Studio 54. She also starred in the music video for her then fiancé, Brian Ferry’s hit Let’s Stick Together.

The 80’s and 90’s gave us the Supermodel, in a class of their own these beautiful women inspired all of us to be chic, classy and as near damn perfect as possible. If women weren’t influenced by their look then, Linda Evangelista’s iconic statement “we don’t wake up for less the $10K a day” would certainly have echoed in the yuppy ears of the high earners of the decade.

The big six, Claudia Schiffer, Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington and *, were the embodiment of money, success and sexual power. We all wanted to be like them.

*(The jury is still out on the 6th, Kate Moss, Stephanie Seymour, Tatjana Patitz, Helena Christiansen? you decide).

Personally this Peter Lindbergh image, screams the decade to me with our favourite blonde super’ possibly on her holidays?

But this amazing Herb Rittz is just as convincing even with the absence of Linda and Claudia.
