Fashion Ads and Photo ops from Last Week

Couture Fashion took centre stage last week (images from Valentino, Chanel and Jean Paul Gaultier below), creating a host of photo ops in Paris, but I’m starting with the first look at Alexander McQueens SS10 Ad campaign. His LFW show was one of the most important this season and has seen fashion forward ladies like Lady Gaga and Daphne Guinness getting those shoes. This snake ad is definitely the most dramatic I’ve seen in a long time, let alone this season. Amazing.

Pier Paolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri for Valentino created a feminine, vibrant wearable collection. Mixing neon and nude tones, both the long and short dresses were the epitome of subtle, summertime glamour. The trouser-suits were equally summery but with a less glamorous, more edgy feel. Hair was as simple as make-up was striking, the neon theme was striped across eyes in thick bands of colour. A beautiful collection.

Jean Paul Gaultier’s Couture collection was an extraordinarily eclectic mix, he infused Mexican with armoured shoulders and tropical floral prints and appliques. creating a collection that stood out as exciting but completely wearable. I loved the leaf fronds that protruded from headdresses, gowns and bags and the armoured knees and shoulders created a fabulous balance to the heavily floral pieces.

The internet has been a-buzzin’ with talk of the “Minnie Mouse hair as seen at the Chanel couture show (see below) last week. I’m sorry Karl, but I’ve seen that somewhere before… I always knew Gary Oldman was a style icon and here he is as Bram Stoker’s Dracula sporting a pretty similar look, non?

Contender for Model of the Year 2009. #2 Lara Stone

Every time I go to the dentist, they always say, ‘You really need to fix that gap of yours.’ I’m like, ‘My gap is paying your dentist bills.'”  And so was the word of Lara Stone, talking to i-D Magazine, in November last year. So I have continued my model of the year blogging, and this German / Dutch / British lady is next on the list. French Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld said about her. “Sometimes a girl just touches you” and following her campaigns with Chloe, DKNY, Givenchy, H&M, Jil Sander , Max Mara, Belstaff, Jean Paul Gaultier, Nicole Farhi and Louis Vuitton SS10, it seems many others would agree.

Lara Stone was named by UK Vogue as model of the year in their December 09 issue, of which she was the cover star. She a features in a story / shoot in their Jan 2010 issue which hit stands last week. She is highly coveted by magazine and fashion houses alike and has an edginess that few of her peers can offer. Indeed, there are very few women in the world that can make a Page 3 shoot, high fashion, see images from ID December 09 (below). A massive favourite of the magazine, she not only featured on their Nov 08 cover, but is also one of the 3 cover stars for the December 09 issue. In February this year Vogue Paris dedicated itself to Lara and featured her as the issue’s cover star and sole model promoting Carine Roitfeld to make the above statement. Her gap-tooth smile, razor-sharp cheek bones, smouldering pout and killer figure make her as commercial as she is high-fashion, here’s why.

Sonia Rykiel pour H&M Lingerie

On Tuesday night in Paris, Alice Dellal, Lily Cole, Jean Paul Gaultier, Eva Hertzgovina and Ellen von Unwerth joined Sonia Rykiel for the launch of her fabulous lingerie range for H&M. They, along with 2000 guests sat under a giant lit-up replica Eiffel Tower in the Grand Palais for a preview of the Sonia Rykiel pour H&M collection which goes on sale this saturday. (December 5th). The magical show was a kind of French Alice in Wonderland, set designer Simon Costin recreated a spectacular Champs Élysées complete with the white rabbit and giant mushrooms in amongst the floats. Models showed off the pieces as they sat on swings or stood against giant books atop floats that travelled through the room.

It is the first time a designer collaboration with H&M has resulted in a lingerie collection and it is absolutely gorgeous. It’s not just your pants and vest kind of collection, there is everything included, from pretty French knickers to corsets, pyjamas to dressing gowns, headbands to slippers. It’s enough to make you want to organise a sleep-over! Fabrics include silk, chiffon and velvet with rhinestone and Grosgrain detailing and with the couture shows using underwear as outerwear, see John Galliano AW09 collection for Christian Dior, this collection will definitely encourage us to do the same. I’ll be channelling my inner siren and following suit!

Margareta van den Bosch, creative advisor of H&M said of the collaboration.“Who better than Sonia Rykiel to make lingerie chic! These styles are really new, sensual and very feminine yet “dressed”. I love the stripes, which are so modern, and the black and nude colours are very flattering. It’s about looking good underneath for your own sake”. Of the show she added, “It was the most magical evening. Sonia Rykiel is so totally Parisian, the epitome of chic. It was such a thrill to work with a fashion icon like Sonia Rykiel. The lingerie collection is really the perfect Christmas gift”. You listening Santa???
