NCAD 4th year Graduate Fashion Show

Hey All,

Last week I posted some promotional shots from this years National College of Art and Design (NCAD) 4th year graduate fashion show. It was held last Saturday at the stunning Royal Hospital Kilmainham, Dublin.

I went along to see the show in the afternoon, it was a pretty fashion-heavy crowd too. I spotted Stellar & Irish Tatler fashion eds, stylists like Aisling Farinella, The Sunday Business Post fashion columnist & blogger Ruth O’Connor, designers like Peter O’Brien and last year’s NCAD River Island bursary winner Sile O’Shea, as well as TV presenter, Sonya Lennon.

There were seven parts to the show, including 2nd and 3rd year students’ capsule collections; River Island denim collection, and Persil ‘Red’ competitions. As well as the 4th year Menswear, Textile, and Fashion Degree Collections. The show featured the best part of 250 pieces, so obviously I can’t post them all, but here are a couple of highlights / favourites.

Big, Brand-Spanking New Look

Hey all,

Be prepared for A LOT of coverage about this over the next few days.

I’ll be brief about the new New Look in the Jervis centre; It’s big and new and shiny… and big. Massive in fact, even the escalators are massive (see below); the shoe department alone has thousands of pairs lined up.

They have loads of independent brands in the Boutique Brands section (downstairs), as well as all their in-house lines; Tall, Inspire, Idol, Maternity, Men, Limited Edition etc…

The store opens 10 am today (Friday Nov. 5th) and the first 100 hundred shoppers get a €10 voucher. Here are a few snaps from the opening bash and mini fashion show yesterday evening.

Xx

Rocha Celebrates 30 Years in Fashion.

John Rocha Moet CelebrationLast night at The Mansion House, Dublin 2, honorary Irishman and fashion designer, John Rocha joined designers Louise Kennedy and Pauric Sweeney in becoming the latest creative force to be honoured for his contribution to both Irish and world fashion. Moët & Chandon presented the designer with a personalised magnum of Champagne in recognition of his work of the past 3 decades.

Moët rep, Caroline Sleiman (pictured here with Rocha) said; “John’s designs are recognised all over the world for their quality and attention to detail. Every woman should own a piece from John Rocha, whether it’s clothing, accessories or an item for home”.

Over the past 30 years John Rocha has developed his brand, from a debut, Chinatown label and collections for AWear, Brown Thomas and Waterford Crystal, into interior designing, see the  the Morrison Hotel, D1, and opening has flagship store on Dover Street in London. This, according to Wikipedia, comprises a business worth a cool, €200M per year.

His latest womenswear collection for SS10 was shown at London Fashion Week last month and was a floaty, feminine celebration in soft pastel shades of pink, nude, fawn and pale blue. Tunic dresses and skirts were layered with cut chiffon to create a soft feather-like appearance; dress yokes were sheer and embellished with pearls and lace. John Rocha SS10 Catwalk web

Against the melee of chiffon, there were more severe, structured pieces; over-sized jackets, stiff-crocheted peplums, black trouser suits and city shorts. I don’t need to mention the glory of the headwear.

Laura Whitmore x AWear

Laura Whitmore laura whitmore launchHey All,

Last night I was at Ely Place as it played host to the official launch of the Laura Whitmore inspired collection for A|wear. The sleek, Royal Hibernian Academy was the venue as Dublin’s fashion crown mingled, (very closely) surrounded by models in the new collection. Angela Scanlon; singer (Dirty Epics) SJ Wai O’Flynn; DJ Sophie De Vere; artist, Sarah McCall; as well as models, Kate McDaid and Niamh Clinton, were all wearing a piece from the collection.

Fashion Breakthrough SS10 Fashion Show

Fashion Breakthrough Catwalk lo res Tuesday afternoon I was lucky enough to be invited down to Meeting House Square, Temple Bar to watch a fashion show showcasing the SS10 collections of some of Dublins most promising new designers. It was part of Fashion Breakthrough, an bi-annual event organised by designer Lisa Shawgi to promote and showcase Dublin’s hottest, upcoming fashion talent. The SS10 show was for press and trade only but it featured some strong themes to bear in mind when we’re considering next season’s wardrobe.

Salmon pink, featured heavily throughout with three or four of the designers including it in their colour palettes. Old fashioned Paisley was given a refreshing and modern twist with a number of the designers re-creating the traditional pattern in both vibrant and pastel shades. Excess fabric was also a key theme, with draping, layers and ruffles featuring in all the collections. The show was then followed later that evening by a current-collection show from the same designers; that show was open to the general public.

The designers showing SS10 were, in running order:

Dublin’s Fashion Breakthrough

Fashion BreakthroughMonday August 17th sees the opening of a ‘pop-up’ boutique in the painfully trendy area of Cow’s Lane, Temple Bar. For the following 6 days we will be able to browse and buy “some of Ireland’s most cutting-edge collections” for AW09. I don’t really know too much about Fashion Breakthrough who are running the event but of themselves they say the: ” The purpose of the project is to keep young designers connected, to provide a high profile showcase for some outstanding work and to promote sustainable Irish Fashion”. In any case, any event that intends to promote emerging fashion design has to be worth a shout out.

The 6 day fashion event promises to “stage an Uprising” as it showcases the talents of 13 “fashion creators”. It all starts on Monday with the opening of the ‘pop-up’ boutique at 4 Pudding Row, Cow’s Lane, Temple Bar. The Fashion Breakthrough peeps are saying of the boutique that “you’ll find unparalleled variety and unique pieces from our up-and-coming Irish designers who will themselves be on-hand right through to Saturday to offer personal consultations and expertise”.

On Tuesday from 7pm there will be a catwalk show held in a marquee in Meeting House Square, featuring “inspiring ensembles by the top names to watch in Irish couture”. Some of the designers that will be showing their collections include, Zoe Boomer, Sophie Rieu, Bebhinn Flood, Heidi Higgins, Deirdre Harte, Lisa Shawgi and Sinead Doyle among others. It all sounds pretty darn great, plus there will be music and refreshments throughout the evening. Tickets are priced at €15 each and are available from Temple Bar Cultural Centre or www.tickets.ie. See an interview with organiser Lisa Shawgi here.
