SS10 Ad Campaigns: Something Different

After seeing Lara Stone grab the Louis Vuitton SS10 ad campaign reins from Madge, (she’s all D&G this season) I think we were right to hope there’ll be few more treats in store. I’ve perused a couple of ads this week namely the Burberry Prorsum and edc / Esprit SS10 ads. When I first saw Burberry’s, I swooned at how utterly perfect Emma Watson is for the brand just as much as I swooned at the pieces she is wearing. (Still cannot bring myself to yearn for a Burberry-check bag though…). Because I had seen the collection – LFW belonged to Burberry Prorsum – and Emma Watson in Burberry so much already, as much as I do love them I wasn’t completely blown away by the ads. But I mean who doesn’t love a Mario Testino shoot? What’s more, Christopher Bailey played a part on this one too. But I was delighted to hear that Alex Watson, Emma’s brother was in the ads with her. Because her look is so perfect for the brand, opting to include her brother in their ads is just a great choice, plus, it really is too cute!

This last pic is Emma Watson in a H-amazing mac with model Max Hurd.

I have a teeny tiny issue with the second ad campaign however. Julia Restoin Roitfeld and Daisy Lowe for Esprit… hmmm. I think Esprit must be absolutely huge in Continental Europe, its casual range reminds me of yoga obsessed swedish nannies or Spanish exchange students. This is of course no bad thing, just because I’m a total aerobics dodger, it doesn’t mean I hate on those who aren’t! The thing is, when I look in the window at Esprit I would never associate their clothes with either of these two young women. So I’m just hoping that Esprit have created a harder or edgier collection to suit the choice of ‘faces’ they have chosen for their SS10 ad campaigns. Otherwise I just don’t get it, I’ll have to actually go in and have a look at what they have then… oh wait now….. ah right, yeah I get it now.

Score Esprit. I guess I won’t be the only one curious to see what you have to offer that appeals to these two chicas. Hmmm, if I wanted to revamp the image of my casual wear brand I’d go with them too. Especially as Daisy and her fella look gorgeous in edc and Julia looks stunning in Esprit.

Suspenders!? hmm… Actually they’re tights.

Lily Allen in Mock StockingsI made a point of going to stores that I don’t normally venture into yesterday, including Tommy Hilfiger on Grafton Street. I also would not have counted Arnotts Project as a place I shop in either. In fact until yesterday, I had never stepped foot inside the place. I’ve passed it on numerous occasions but never went inside and thinking about it, I have absolutely no idea why. Maybe I thought it would be over priced, wouldn’t have what I was looking for, or was no different from the original Arnotts or even Debenhams across the road.

So I finally got myself in there yesterday afternoon and I liked it. It’s like a bigger, shinier version of BT2, with bigger shinier fittings. I got talking to one of the sales girls who told me that the Project had been open a year and that things were still in the experimental phase. The departments that occupied each floor for example, had been moved around recently and the current layout was proving to be the most successful. Well it looks good anyway.

I looked through the handbags, accessories and cosmetics stands at the front of the store, before I discovered the old-school-style, hosiery department. In fact I was in tights heaven; (if there could possibly be a place) there were hundreds of pairs by dozens of different designers and brands. Everything from lace to leopard-print in as many colours as you can imagine.

I saw the Henry Holland for Pretty Polly range and having been inspired by pics of Lily Allen (see above) earlier this week grabbed a pair of ‘Mock Stock’ from his collection. (Hers weren’t Henry Holland but were definitely of the Mock Stock(ing) variety). They’re a full-leg tight that she is wearing, with a pattern that is made to look like stockings. I also bought a pair of leopard-print tights by Jonathan Aston, a la Emma Watson for Teen Vogue. Loving Arnotts Project.

The photography of Ellen von Unwerth – A Study

Ellen von Unwerth is one of the most important fashion photographers of her time. If you have yet to discover the provocative tastes and fantastic talents of this circus performer / fashion model-turned photographer, I really recommend you do. I have been a fan of hers for quite some time (I used to buy The Face a lot in the 90′s) and I was reunited with her talents when I came across this shoot of Emma Watson for VS magazine’s SS10 issue, earlier this year.

Ellen von Unwerth has one of the most prolific careers of any fashion photographer. She was born in Germany in the mid ’50′s and has photographed some of the most beautiful and stylish women in the world for magazines like, Arena, The Face, I-D, Vanity Fair and Vogue. She took to the other side of the camera in the 80′s photographing her model friends, but it was the Guess Jeans campaign that made her and subject, Claudia Schiffer, fashion forces to be reckoned with.

Throughout her astounding career, using images of powerful femininity, she has pushed the boundaries in fashion photography. Think cigarette smoking, Betty Paige lookalikes wearing top hats, stockings and smudged red lipstick. To get more of an insight into how this fantastic artist creates her iconic images read this interview here. Otherwise, simply scroll through the images here representing a small collection of some of her work.

Burberry Prorsum Closes LFW – Pure Magic

Okay so here we go; the FRow (front row) at Burberry Prorsum’s closing show at London Fashion Week were:

Gwynneth Paltrow, Liv Tyler, Stella McCartney, Emma Watson, Carine Roitfeld, Anna Wintour, Freida Pinto, Alexa Chung, Daisy Lowe, Agyness Deyn, Erin O’Connor and Mary-Kate Olsen… as well as up and coming style setter, Jameela Jamil (T4, Channel 4). That is one powerfully stylish ‘Frow’. If these women are supporting you and sitting on the Frow at your fashion show, which is representing a ‘homecoming’ for your brand, which is closing London Fashion Week that is celebrating its 25th anniversary, you have one heck of a show to put on.

Emma Watson, Alexa Chung, Freida Pinto, Gwynneth Paltrow, Burberry London Fashion Week lo res

What’s more, Emma, Alexa, Freida and Gwynneth were all wearing Burberry Prorsum and looking fantastic to boot. Naturally I’m favouring Emma Watson’s metallic sparkles but Alexa Chung rocked that mac so well she’ll have set a new micro-trend by the weekend. Hmmm, I wonder, do Topshop have affordable Burberry style macs anyone..? So what was the actual show like? I mean, with a crowd like this one you’d be forgiven for thinking that the catwalk would come second, but ever since I saw the clips and images from the show first thing this morning, it’s all I’ve been able to look at all day.

It’s amazing how on first glance I just adored this collection, it usually takes a few looks for me to really get and understand a collection or where a designer has gone / is going with it creatively. But Burberry Prorsum SS10 was so immediate and I still can’t get enough of it hours later. It is totally wearable, utterly chic and feminine, as well as being, elegant and classic with striking design detailing and structure that makes it totally refreshing.

The twists on the classic Burberry mac were ingenious; shortening the hemlines and sleeve lengths, adding rouching and draping on the shoulders and lower coat, using sheer or shiny fabrics in pretty pastels and neutrals. Removing the sleeves also meant that the classic mac became an evening dress in at least one instance. Even though the collection embraced femininity in both fabric and shape, masculine elements, like black buttons, large leather belts with chunky buckles all prevented it from becoming overly pretty.

Dresses varied between simple shift dresses in shiny fabrics; draped and rouched skirts in silk chiffon and shredded foil, (see Emma Watson). All worn with brown leather belts, ankle socks and sky-high platform heels in pale tones. It looked to be an absolute triumph, reports say it was the ultimate homecoming. The icing on the cake was a glittery, sparkly silver shower of ticker tape along the catwalk during the finale. Verdict: it was an utterly perfect fashion show.

Get Emma Watson’s Teen Vogue Look

emma-watson-teen-vogue-shoot-3Of all the shoots we saw of Emma Watson on the run-up to the release of HP6 her Teen Vogue shoot was the most dramatic and awe inspiring. The combination of the shoots setting, the props – (the miniature ponies esp.) – and the amazing, eclectic styling, (Go team Teen Vogue!) came together to create an iconic spread.

So I was looking at the Topshop AW09 collections and they have pieces that look like they are straight out of the shoot! Vogue chose a D&G Victoriana blouse and the skirt is Erin Fetherston, Whisty’s blog went for Topshop, Accessorize, BooHoo.com, Oasis and A. Rubanesque.

Ginny gets Grazia

Bonnie Wright Grazia Shoot 1 lo resMake no bones about it, this blog is a fan of Emma Watson’s style but it seems that her co-star and friend, Bonnie Wright, AKA Ginny Weasley, is also a budding contender in the style stakes. This weeks Grazia has featured the young actress in a moody and super stylish four page spread in the mag. I grabbed a copy today and am seriously impressed, the 18 year old showed her classic, understated style at the recent HP6, UK and US premiers wearing Miu Miu and Prada respectively. Of her fashion choices she says, “I wanted two totally different looks, Miu Miu is more of a fun, London, fashion-forward idea and for New York it was more elegant.” Speaking to Grazia she also confessed, “It took me such a long time to decide what to wear”.

She also chats about what it is like growing up with the cast and crew of Harry Potter and what her ambitions are after the final scene has been filmed. She comes across as unguarded and genuine in the interview and at 18, that’s exactly how she should come across.

Bonnie is wearing a DVF dress and Temperley belt. DVF is available at BT2, Temperley at Brown Thomas.

HP6 Premiere: Reports see Emma Watson go old school

HP6 Premiere Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Daniel Radcliffe

Darn that English weather! The Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince premier was more wet carpet than red carpet because just as the stars arrived, the heavens opened. The heavy rain certainly didn’t dampen the spirits as the fans dressed as Quidditch players screamed and chanted as they had autographs signed. Most of the cast got drenched, including Emma Watson who stole the show like a true A-Lister wearing an amazing 1970’2 Ossie Clark vintage chiffon dress. The now, leading lady teamed the dress with a simple double red headband and some amazing gold heels.

Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint gadded about gleefully ignoring the downpour and with the former positively excitable. He took an age to walk up and down the press area, as did a number of other actors, flitting back and forth to speak to as many of the waiting press as possible. The Phelps twins looked handsome and t-ALL with James Phelps revealing that he spent most of the time whilst making this movie behind the camera! OOOh new career alert! 1 week to go…!

Teen Vogue and the English Rose… Emma Watson Style

Emma Watson is continuing her whirlwind tour of international fashion magazines looking nothing less than like the exquisite English rose that she is. The latest magazine to have Ms Watson grace its front cover is Teen Vogue as part of a shoot they are calling Emma Enchanted. Photographed at this beautiful stately home in England, the actress wore a fabulous array of pieces from the AW09 catwalks including D&G and Burberry Prorsum among others.

Emma Watson Teen Vogue 4

Emma Watson  really is one of the most fabulous young women in the media to style-watch. Her obvious passion for clothes and her specific tastes always seem to come out in which ever magazine she is being shot for. This Teen Vogue one though, for me at least, seems to sum-up the actresses media persona. A video on the Teen Vogue website from the shoot sees Emma explain that she’s a big fan of the mag. She explains, “Their styling is always really creative…I think it’s really innovative, I’ve really loved everything that I’ve worn today. More pics and info… Continue reading ‘Teen Vogue and the English Rose… Emma Watson Style’
