In a Discotheque at Dawn #2

Hey all,

So after Tuesday’s post, I was kinda of inspired by the music; specifically the lyrics. ‘In a Discotheque at Dawn‘, makes me think of  stuff  that only really happens at festivals. Dancing till the sun comes up is usually the preserve of summertime and being outdoors.

Anyway I went to the student night at Kling on Blooms Lane the other night and got talking to the Daddy or Chips club-night organiser. (When you pay in to the club, you 15% off vouchers for Kling and other places). So the subject turned to blogging then that Bryan Ferry post. Then to the idea to do a style-post, on an empty dance floor, in an empty discotheque as it were, at ‘dawn,’ so to speak.

Hot pants and discotheques go hand in hand and I love the dressed down chic of a fitted sweater or cardi so that’s what I went with. I just had my fringe trimmed too, which I’m delighted about. (I’ve missed peering out from under it, and it always ends up being pushed to the side, emo-like when it’s not kept trimmed.)

I’ve always wanted one of these egg chairs too, may have to invest in an Hermès Kellydoscope bag so I can smuggle this one out of the club.

My word this last photo makes me want red hair…

OR: Models and Music #4,327

Hey All,

I have to immediately point out (for fear of being told off), the title of this post must be solely credited to Bryan Ferry. The words are lyrics from a song on his new album, Olympia. As much as I love Roxy Music and therefore Mr. Ferry himself, he doesn’t half do great album covers. This latest one;

Yeah, Kate Moss looking divine.

That could’ve been all, but I thought I’d post a few more model-on-album-cover pictures.

Jerry Hall on Roxy Music’s Siren Album Cover:

Twiggy (and Bowie) on David Bowie’s Pin-Ups album Cover:

Bettie Paige on Fats Waller’s Ain’t Misbehavin’ album cover:

Jean Shrimpton on Will Glahé’s Accordion Pops 1 album cover:

Bizarre? yes. Included here, purely because of the Vespa? Yes.

Xx

Super Model, Super Influence

With the Metropolitan Museum, New York’s latest exhibition, Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion it brings to our attention that models have been influencing fashion for decades. We are so preoccupied with Kate Moss inspiring the fashion of the moment that we could easily believe that it is a new phenomenon. But just as Hollywood actresses have for decades inspired fashion and trends so too have models.

Think Jean Shrimpton’s controversial appearance at the Melbourne Cup in Australia, 1965 which caused the universal acceptance of the Mini skirt. Or Twiggy in the mid 60’s, as the face of ’66. Her stick-thin frame and amazing eye make up influenced the way young women not only dressed but also the way the desired their physique to be.

On then to the 70’s with the rise of the glamazonian model, Jerry Hall and Grace Jones inspired women to seek the luxuries in life. Gerry herself was discovered on a beach in St. Tropez and by the end of the decade was a regularly seen on the arm of Mick Jagger in swish haunts such as Studio 54. She also starred in the music video for her then fiancé, Brian Ferry’s hit Let’s Stick Together.

The 80’s and 90’s gave us the Supermodel, in a class of their own these beautiful women inspired all of us to be chic, classy and as near damn perfect as possible. If women weren’t influenced by their look then, Linda Evangelista’s iconic statement “we don’t wake up for less the $10K a day” would certainly have echoed in the yuppy ears of the high earners of the decade.

The big six, Claudia Schiffer, Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington and *, were the embodiment of money, success and sexual power. We all wanted to be like them.

*(The jury is still out on the 6th, Kate Moss, Stephanie Seymour, Tatjana Patitz, Helena Christiansen? you decide).

Personally this Peter Lindbergh image, screams the decade to me with our favourite blonde super’ possibly on her holidays?

But this amazing Herb Rittz is just as convincing even with the absence of Linda and Claudia.
