Inspired by Post – Be Blonde

Hey all,

So after the summer ’12 inspired fashion post on Wednesday, I reckon it’s time I looked at summer hair. I want to go blonder, not screen-siren structured blonde. I mean more California blonde, that perfect clean, surf-y, fresh kind of blonde.  Hair that hasn’t seen a curling iron or straightners, (or at least doesn’t look like it has), hair that is blonde from root to tip, naturally sun-bleached or otherwise, as long as it is blonde, not ombre blonde.

Simple, brilliant, stunning blonde.

Model Blonde: Abbey Lee Kershaw

Rock Blonde: Anita Pallenberg

Editorial Blonde: Anja Rubik (for Vogue)

Beach Blonde (via weheartit)

Shameless Blonde (weheartit)

Classic Blonde: Brigitte Bartdot

Controversial Blonde: Courtney Love (for Elle Mag)

Blonde Fringe: Blondie in a Hoodie at CBGB’s

Smirnoff in a can blonde!

Mod Blonde

Windy Blonde: hair blowing in the wind (weheartit)

Ever noticed how beautiful blonde hair looks in black and white photography?

Yours,

Whisty Xx

Colour Block Lips

Hey All,

Today’s post is brought to you by the colour orangy-red and the word minimal.

I’ve spent the last two years going hyper on eye make-up. Lashings of gel, liquid and Kohl eye-liner and tonnes of smoky eye-shadow. I fancy a change, and it comes courtesy of Gucci, Fendi, and Diane von Furstenberg (SS11) and Hakaan (AW11) .

It’s not pretty, pale or subtle orange; it is IN (ON) YOUR FACE ORANGE!!! Bright and neon and I-can-see-you-from-across-the-street orange. Because lips are so strong, eye make-up is at a minimal though I dig the fierce brow that balances out the look, (see Hakaan below) worn with little or no mascara.

I like the idea of clear mascara for daytime and plain black for night.

The perfect tangerine shade at Fendi (SS11)

Glossy at Gucci (SS11)

Freja Beha Erichsen at Gucci (SS11)

With a fierce brow at Hakaan (AW11)

Pretty pinkish tones at Diane von Furstenberg (SS11)

60′s eye make up – Watch & Learn: How to

Hey All,

It’s taken a while, a whole lot of black eye-liner and about three pairs of false eyelashes but I have just about managed to get the hang of 60′s eye make-up. I’ve loved the over-the-top cartooniness of it ever since I first saw pictures of Twiggy in an old copy of Vogue. Both her and the enigmatic Peggy Moffitt had the 60′s eye make-up down to a fine art (models did their own make-up in those days by all accounts) and between them, they epitomised the fashion make-up of the era.

Eh… and now my effort:

(I don’t do myself any favours on this blog do I, posting photographs of famous era-defining models by famous era-defining photographers and then a few snap shots of me. Ah well, I had fun doing it so I guess that’s all that matters).

How I achieved the look OR, exactly how much eye make up it took to get my eyes to look this big:

Steps 1-3:

Step 1. Cover the eyelids right up to the brow / brow bone in white / off white eyeshadow. Step 2. Draw a line, just above the crease on your eyelid in a lighter shade of eye-liner / eye-shadow; just to make sure you know where the arch will sit. Step 3. Go over the arch line with a kohl pencil.

Steps 3-4:

Step 4: Blend some grey eye-shadow at the outer edges under the arch, to soften it slightly. Step 5. Liquid eyeliner above the eyelashes (the thicker this line is, the better). Step 6. More eye-liner, if you have gel liner then it works brilliantly under the bottom lashes (don’t join up any of the individual black lines, you should end up with three separate lines at the end) Gel is also great for paint on the ‘false’ lashes underneath the eye. (I just went with three on either side in the outer corners, Twiggy did hers all the way along).

Step 7. Put white liner along the inside of your lower eyelid and let it bleed a little out from the corners of your eye. Step 8. False lashes, I used Naturalash as they are quite thick, cover all your lashes in mascara, especially the lower ones.

Stars in (and all ’round) their Eyes.

or “I was made for loving you, baby…”

I was having a bit of a spring clean-out, of my make-up bag trunk this morning, and found loads of multi-coloured / sparkly shadows, liners and pencils that I’d kind of forgotten I had. While I was doing said Spring-clean I had this weeks Top40 countdown on MTV and realised how much I love the revival of dramatic eye / face make-up in pop music at the moment. Apart from Lady Gaga who is pretty much leading the way when it comes dramatic anything, there are loads of other ladies grabbing the glitter pen too:

Lady Gaga

Lily Allen

Florence Welch

and Ke$ha (above & below).

…are all doing their own awesome versions of dramatic / stage eye make-up. (Love this last picture!)

Not forgetting, either, the men that led the way in the 70′s.

Gene Simmons, KISS

David Bowie, Aladdin Sane Album

… so I thought, I’d have a go at this myself … one subtle (ish), silver and glitter pattern over one eye later and what do you know, I kinda like it.

I’d just prefer something a little darker and more dramatic…

Now we’re talking, Plus I like it so much I have to keep nipping off to the bathroom to have a look, it’s so sparkly! Close-up:

Dublin Balayage Update

Today was Balayage day, not only was it my first time getting these kind of highlights but was also the first time I’d had my hair done in Dublin. I was a tad nervous, but when I spoke to Lucy in Style Club, I realised that she knew exactly what she was doing and I began to chill out a bit. She told me she was doing Balayage in London 5 years ago and at Style Club since it opened in October last year. So I sat down and was given plenty of new magazines to read and as much tea as I could drink.

I took a few snaps of the process; The first picture shows the regrowth from my last set of foil highlights before any new colour was applied. The second pic is mid application as Lucy was “sweeping” the colour in sections through the top half of my hair, (evidently I’m not in the least bit proud…). The last pic is the end result, with some change?! (I could give The Lion King a run for his money with all that hair!) All in all the whole thing took about an hour and 20, including toner and a big-old, back-combed blow-dry. That is about 2 hours quicker than the last time I had a half-head of foils and I’m genuinely delighted with the result. (It cost €80 (+ tip)).

All new ombre hair.

Yours,

Whisty Xx

Let Your Roots Manouver Your Look

With the final days of WAG-dom finally biting the dust, and the recession in full swing women have realised that the up-keep of things like gel nails and uber-coiffured hair is not only out-dated but also un-realistic. Mixed reviews of her X-Factor wardrobe: dresses; ‘okay’, hair; ‘maybe not’ have signified a certain amount of disenchantment toward queen-WAG Cheryl Tweedy, Cole. I’m not suggesting that women aren’t taking care of their appearance, if anything making an extra effort when times are hard, can make you feel a million dollars. It’s just that we need to find more sensible ways of maintaining a well-kept appearance.

What I find the hardest to maintain on a budget though, is blonde hair. I’ve nearly always dyed may hair a lighter shade than its nondescript ash-blonde / light-brown natural ‘colour’. From adding Sun-In when I was in high-school to going full-on bleach blonde in my late teens / early twenties, I feel better and more confident when my hair is lightened. When I was having a fully bleached ‘do, I was in the salon every 4-5 weeks. Right now though, I have found myself at a crossroads with the whole bleaching thing. The up-keep of having a full head of blonde is very time-consuming and very, very expensive if you want it done properly. At the minute I can’t afford it so I’ve opted for foil high-lights; a set of which I am in the growing-out stage of. A half-head of three-tone-blonde high-lights that I had done in June, to be more specific.

This is where my problem begins; as unnatural as bleach blonde hair looks, it has a certain edge. From Marilyn Monroe to Christina Aguilera; Britney Spears to Sienna Miller, blondes have a kind of seductive power and no-one cares if their hair colour is real / looks real or not. These women have the resources to maintain their brilliantly blonde locks perfectly. As I said, I don’t and have therefore had to opt for foils which are supposed to be a more natural-looking way of lightening your hair and one that needs less maintenance. Using two or more colours, in fine sections across all or part of your head, is supposed to give a naturally highlighted look. The problem is that, it doesn’t. Not at all, every time I have gone for these foil high lights I have paid extra for the most qualified hairdresser in the salon and specified that I want the finest high-lights possible. She has sighed and rolled her eyes sky-ward, I have sat nervously for hours 0n end and walked out later looking like Geri Haliwell at the height of Spice mania. For the next two months, until my hair has grown out a little, I cringe at my zebra-like crown and angle numerous mirrors in front of mirrors atop my bonce to see how bad the damage is. A disaster all round, nearly 6 months after my last striping session, it’s time to get high-lighted again but I’m determined to do it differently this time.

I spent hours at the weekend searching for “natural-looking high-lights” on the internet and I found a process called Balayage. It is said to give a more natural look because the colour is painted on to your hair in individual strands. So rather than the regimented effect of foil high-lights, Balayage high-lights are applied where they will look most natural. The colour isn’t applied right to the scalp so you automatically get that on-trend grown-out / ombre look, letting your natural colour shine through as much or as little as you want. The majority of the lighter colour is concentrated on the ends and around your face, mimicking the way that your hair would naturally lighten if you spent hours in the sun. It also means that you only need to have the colour applied as little as twice a year, because you don’t get that tell-tale line of bleach so it’s also a money concious way of maintaining your a lighter hair colour. According to Primped.com.au, celebrities like, Gisele, Jessica Biel, Erin Wasson, Alexa Chung and SJP among others all have their high-lights added this way. The technique, sometimes Anglicised from the French, to Balliage is also recommended by Elle.com. Although the process was developed in France in the 197o’s, it didn’t become popular in the US until 20 years later and is only even more recently finding its way to salons this side of the pond.

Style Club on South William Street do the technique, I’m booked in tomorrow! I shall post before and after pics, wish me luck and pray I don’t end up looking like a depressed Spice Girl!

Brown Thomas is Definitely F.A.B

Brown Thomas FAB Fashion ExpressNo matter how skint I am I always feel a little bit wealthier by going into Brown Thomas. It’s so weird, I get all precious and check my lipstick and straighten myself out before I walk in there. It’s like going back in time when you’re inside; it’s like you can imagine how it was at the turn of the last century when all the elegant ladies in there would have been showing off their furs and silks and high heels.

Mostly now it’s tourists and bedraggled, be-suited businesswomen hiding from the rain. But I love department stores, and I love designer fashion so it makes sense that I love BT’s. Their Fashion and Beauty (FAB) event starts today and runs untill October 4th. Now before you dismiss this as, “just another in-store promotion” then wait just a sec. There are actually some pretty good goings on:

Today and tomorrow (10th & 11th) is Make-Up by Dior, giving us the chance to have a consultation with Dior’s make-up artist, Martin Aitken. For €25 (redeemable) you get first hand tips from a man who’s done the faces on the BAFTA red carpet for the last three years. Good non?

It’s the fashion part of FAB that I like the sound of;  mini fashions shows will be hosted each saturday afternoon (12.30 and 4pm) of the new collections from: Diane Von Furstenberg (12th Sept) Hugo Boss (19th Sept), Moschino Cheap & Chic (26th Sept) and Escada (3rd October). This saturday you also get to see a special showing of the AW09 collection from Maxmara whilst enjoying a glass of Champagne from midday.

They are also doing the cutest idea ever; from next Saturday (19th) for a week they have installed an Hermès Silk Installation in the Designer Room Level 1 where you can go and learn how to tie your scarf in dozens of different ways. The BT site has all the info anyway.

Bobbi Brown Beauty Survey

Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation SPF15I very rarely blog about make-up simply because it is something that I see as a necessity that most women can’t really do without all the time, whereas fashion is an absolute choice.

Though if I see something relevant or even special, like the smokey eye tutorial, I’ll post about it, but that’s about it. Today though I got an email with a press release from Bobbi Brown, (J’aime their Skin Foudation SPF15 and they do seriously light colours perfect for my pale skin).

The company commissioned a survey of 1000 women in the UK and Ireland to establish our buying habits. The Irish results were broken down as follows: Continue reading ‘Bobbi Brown Beauty Survey’

It’s a Fashion/Rock Hissy Fit

Stella McCartney is being sued by the company that Ali Hewson co-founded, over the word Nude… (Oh the impossible puns!)

The Irish Indo covered the story today and has more on the whole debacle saying:

“At issue is the Beatle daughter’s use of the term “nude” in her eau de toilette “Stella Nude”, due to hit the shelves next month following the launch of her flesh-coloured spring/summer fashion collection.

But Ali, who is the co-founder of the Nude Skincare line founded by Northern organic food supermarket supremo Bryan Meehan, came up with the name “Nude” as a palindrome of her own eco-friendly and Fairtrade-affiliated fashion line “Edun”.”

Meh… Read the rest here if you can be bothered. I reckon Bono and Macca should settle it in the ring!
